Inspiration
Our inspiration pulled from the blue light system located on UC campuses. Students feeling unsafe should have access to emergency from a click of a button without having to located a blue light to be saved.
What it does
Save Our Slugs (SOS) provides instant access to police contact and messaging, along with discreet audio-visual recording for emergencies.
How we built it
n Being our first hackathon, we decided to challenge ourselves by learning a new programming language called DART. Utilizing flutter we learned how to create a whole app that utilized permissions and APIs that use SMS data.
Challenges we ran into
We ran into multiple challenges, we struggled with implementing the SMS system, file management, even setting up Flutter. We continuously had to relearn topics and pull and push thousands of iterations of code. Calling, texting all caused problems that at some point broke all of our code.
Accomplishments we're proud of
We feel accomplished in learning a new language that can be used on via Android and IOS. We are also proud that the app can access permissions on a device that register data to communicate with the authorities, and/or emergency contact.
What we learned
We learned that flutter and DART are used to create a multi access OS system that translates DART into Swift and C++. We also learned how to access multiple data files and terminal passage keys to collaborate on a Github repo.
What's next
for Save Our Slugs As a team, we want to go on forward to create a college event app that allows students to post events and locations to the campus.
SaveOurSlugs
This is the emergency SOS app, Save Our Slugs! This was a hackthon project created by 4 UCSC students for the purpose of making our peers feel safer on campus. With a single button the app will notify emergency services and emergency contacts that you are in danger. At the same time it will record your location and phone camera in order to gain any meaningful information in the event of a catastrophe. Every action completed on this app will also send an incident report email to the phone of the person using the app.

Figures cover GitHub contributors during the hackathon window. A co-authored commit counts in full for each author, so per-member totals add up to more than the whole-team figures.

Layers are inferred from where files sit in the tree, not from reading the code. A project that names its directories unconventionally will read oddly here — open the file browser to check anything the diagram implies.
