Inspiration
Creativity shouldn't be limited by expensive tablets, specialized hardware, or even a canvas. We wondered: what if any surface (a desk, table, or wall) could become a place to create? We wanted to build something that captures the joy of doodling on whatever is nearby, while transforming those simple sketches into something magical and alive.
What it does
EveryPen turns any surface into a digital canvas using a custom handheld stylus. As users draw on a table, their strokes appear in real time on screen. But the drawing is only the beginning. With a single click, a sketch is transformed into an infinite generative pattern inspired by the original artwork. Users can continue refining their drawing or enter an interactive experience where the artwork evolves, shifts, and responds to movement. The stylus becomes more than a pen; it becomes a creative instrument that lets users shape and explore a living version of their art.
How we built it
We built a custom stylus powered by a Raspberry Pi and onboard sensors to capture movement and interaction. The stylus communicates wirelessly with our web application, allowing users to draw and manipulate digital artwork in real time. Our software transforms user sketches into generative patterns and interactive visual experiences using procedural graphics, motion systems, and AI-assisted creative effects.
Challenges we ran into
One of the biggest challenges was translating physical movement into intuitive digital interactions. We explored different approaches for tracking position and orientation while keeping the experience responsive and natural. Another challenge was balancing artistic control with creative discovery. We wanted users to feel ownership over their creations while still being surprised by the transformations generated from their original sketches. Instead of building another drawing application, we created a new way to interact with digital art, starting with a simple doodle and ending with a living, evolving artwork.
What we learned
This project taught us a lot about sensor-driven interaction design, real-time communication between hardware and web applications, and designing creative tools that feel intuitive rather than technical. Most importantly, we learned that some of the most engaging creative experiences come from amplifying human expression rather than replacing it.
What's next
In the future, we'd like to improve tracking accuracy, support collaborative creation, and expand the range of interactive experiences users can generate from their artwork. Our long-term vision is to make creativity more accessible by turning any surface into a place where ideas can come to life.
